The Transient Series
The idea of belonging is the focus of the Transient series. I believe that most people have felt out of place at some point in their lives, and I want to connect with those people. The prints depict larger-than-life cats wandering through an urban landscape, searching for where they belong. Despite their size, the cats seem as though they fit in within their environments. I want to show that the confusion and struggle of not fitting in or feeling like we don’t belong is not always obvious on the exterior. Sometimes we may feel we are a larger-than-life cat traversing through life among “normal” people.
Stone lithography is a complex and physical process, evolving graining, drawing, and two etches before finally printing. After having made so much effort to create a print, the image is removed from the stone so it can be used for a new project. Printmaking produces multiples, but I feel that stone lithography places limits. There is an impermanence about it that I connect with. Like the cats in my prints, like people through the stages of life, the images are transitory. They only come to live on the stone for a short time before they move on and a new one comes to stay.
